Snow-capped, near-perfectly conical, and very much alive, Cotopaxi is the picture most people have in their heads when they imagine the Andes. It’s one of the most rewarding day trips from Quito — if you respect the altitude.
What to expect
Cotopaxi National Park sits south of Quito on the “Avenue of the Volcanoes.” A typical visit includes:
- Driving up to the parking area and hiking to the José Rivas refuge at around 4,800 m — short in distance, hard on the lungs.
- The shimmering Limpiopungo lagoon on the páramo, with the volcano reflected on a clear morning.
- Wild horses, big skies, and wind-scoured high-altitude grassland.
The volcano itself rises to nearly 5,900 m, and even the visitor areas are very high, so this is a place to move slowly and dress warmly.
Getting there from Quito airport (UIO)
The park is a longer drive from UIO — across and south of the metro area, then up into the highlands. Tips
- Acclimatize first — don’t attempt the refuge hike on your arrival day. Spend a day or two in Quito or Papallacta first.
- Bring layers, gloves, sunglasses, and water — weather changes fast at altitude.
- Go early; the volcano often clouds over by midday.
- Pair it with a stop in the highlands on the way back — just ask when you book.
