Cumbayá & Tumbaco from Quito Airport: The Valley Closest to UIO

March 21, 2026

If you want a calmer, warmer, and closer base than central Quito — especially handy near the airport — the Valle de Tumbaco is the local secret. Cumbayá and Tumbaco sit lower than the city, so the climate is milder and the pace is more relaxed.

What’s there

Cumbayá has grown into a polished dining and café scene around its central plaza, popular with Quiteños on weekends. Highlights:

  • Excellent restaurants and coffee without the Old Town crowds.
  • The Chaquiñán — a flat former railway line turned walking and cycling trail through the valley.
  • An easygoing, residential feel that’s great for jet-lag recovery or a long layover.

It’s also the gateway toward Papallacta and the eastern mountains.

Getting there from Quito airport (UIO)

This is the closest populated valley to the airport — typically only around 25–35 minutes from UIO, since both sit on the eastern side of the metro area. That makes Cumbayá a smart choice if you have an early flight, a short stay, or simply don’t want to climb all the way up to central Quito after landing.

Anywhere in Cumbayá is its own prepaid product: $75 one-way in a luxury SUV. See Quito airport to anywhere in Cumbayá or compare all three rates on the rates page. It is not the $100 city rate.

Tips

  • Great pick for early departures — you’re close to UIO without being in the airport itself.
  • Lower elevation than Quito means a gentler first night at altitude.
  • Use it as a base for Papallacta’s hot springs or a quiet first day before exploring the Old Town.

Book the short hop from arrivals and you can be sitting down to dinner in the valley within the hour.
