Quito's TelefériQo & Pichincha: Riding to 4,000 Metres Above the City

For the best panorama of Quito — the city stretching for miles along its high valley — head up the TelefériQo, one of the highest aerial cable cars in the world.

What to expect

The gondola climbs the flank of Pichincha volcano to Cruz Loma, at around 4,050 m. From the top you get:

• A staggering viewpoint over Quito and, on clear days, a ring of distant volcanoes including Cotopaxi.
• Short walking paths, swings, and photo spots along the ridge.
• The trailhead for the hike up Rucu Pichincha (around 4,700 m) — a demanding half-day for acclimatized, well-prepared walkers only.

Even if you just ride up and back, the altitude jump is dramatic — go slowly and savor it.

Getting there from Quito airport (UIO)

The cable-car base is on the west side of Quito, so from UIO in the eastern valley it’s a drive across the city. A private transfer takes you straight there or to your hotel first; a flat rate means no meter through Quito traffic, and your driver can wait or collect you afterward.

Tips

• Save it for after you’ve acclimatized — 4,000 m hits hard if you just landed.
• Go on a clear morning; afternoons cloud over fast.
• Bring a warm layer — it’s much colder at the top than in the city.
• Don’t attempt Rucu Pichincha alone or unacclimatized; it’s a serious mountain.
