Why Otavalo is worth the drive

The Plaza de los Ponchos market fills the town center with handwoven textiles, alpaca scarves, ponchos, jewelry, and Andean crafts. It runs daily but is biggest and most vibrant on Saturdays, when the animal and produce markets come alive too. Otavalo sits at around 2,550 m in a valley ringed by volcanoes, so the air is crisp and the light is beautiful.

Nearby, it’s easy to add the Peguche waterfall, the Cuicocha crater lake, or the leather town of Cotacachi to make a full day of it.

Getting there from Quito airport (UIO)

Otavalo is roughly two hours north of Quito on the Panamericana, climbing through classic Andean scenery. From Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Tababela, a private transfer skips the cross-city bus connections entirely: your driver meets you at arrivals and takes you straight north.
