Mindo Cloud Forest from Quito Airport: Birds, Chocolate, and the Drive In

What to do in Mindo

Mindo sits at around 1,250 m, so it’s noticeably greener and milder than Quito. It’s one of the best birdwatching spots on the planet — hummingbirds by the dozen, and if you’re lucky, the bright-orange Andean cock-of-the-rock. Beyond birds:

Ride the tarabita (cable car) across the canyon to hike a trail of waterfalls.
Tour a small-batch chocolate maker from cacao bean to bar.
Go ziplining, tubing on the river, or visit a butterfly farm.

It works as a long day trip or, better, an overnight to catch the dawn chorus.

Getting there from Quito airport (UIO)

Mindo is around two to two-and-a-half hours from Quito, descending the western slope of the Andes through changing cloud-forest scenery.
