First Trip to Quito from the US: Flights, Entry, Packing, and the Airport Ride

A first trip to Quito from the United States is an ordinary international flight plus two local facts: the airport is well outside the city, and the city is high. This page is what to confirm, what to pack, and how the ride from Mariscal Sucre (UIO) works once you land.

Schedules and entry rules below are a snapshot or a caution. Recheck the airline and the official government pages close to departure.

Nonstops people look up most often are from Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, and New York (JFK). Which of those are operating, and the minute they land, moves by season. Your ticket beats any article.

Two evening arrivals are written up from public schedules checked in early October 2026, with a note to confirm them:

Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, and JFK show up in the same searches. Around that early-October 2026 check, a Delta nonstop from Atlanta was an early-evening arrival, and an Avianca arrival from JFK was in the early morning. A Fort Lauderdale nonstop was not confirmed as current, so do not assume one is operating. Open the airline’s site for the time on your date.

Other late banks, including Bogotá and Panama City, are in the late-arrival guide from the same schedule check. If yours is a night landing, read that before you decide to sort a car at the curb.

Entry rules: look them up, do not memorize a blog

US citizens travel to Ecuador with a passport. Beyond that, treat the details as official-source material: how long you may stay as a tourist, whether a visa is required for your purpose, whether you need proof of onward travel, and whether any vaccination rule applies because of where else you have been. Those points change, and they depend on your passport and your route.

Use a primary source before you fly. The practical pair is the US Department of State’s Ecuador information and the Ecuadorian government page that states entry rules for visitors. A travel blog, including this one, is not the authority. Check again the week you leave. Carry the passport, and keep a copy stored separately.

What to pack for the city, not for a beach

Quito is on the equator and it is not hot in the coastal sense. Days are often mild, evenings are cooler, and the sun is strong because of the elevation. Pack layers you can add and remove: a light jacket, a shirt you can roll, long pants, and a rain layer. Afternoon weather can change. Check a forecast for your dates rather than an average printed in a guide.

Shoes should handle hills. Old Town is cobbled and steep. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses matter more than people expect. Any prescription medicine stays in its original packaging, in your carry-on, with a bit more than the exact number of days.

Ecuador’s plugs and household voltage are generally in the same family as the United States, so many US chargers plug in directly. Confirm with a current electrical reference if a device is particular.

Money is simple and still worth a sentence. Ecuador uses the US dollar. Bring some small bills. Do not plan on an airport ATM as your only cash after a late flight. The payment detail is in paying for a Quito airport ride.

The first day, including the car

Do not schedule a hard activity for the afternoon you land. Central Quito is about 9,350 feet. What that feels like, and what to skip on day one, is in altitude on arrival. The order inside the terminal — immigration, bags, customs, SIM or eSIM, and the driver — is the arrival guide.

Then the drive. About 45–60 minutes to a city hotel, 25–35 to Cumbayá, 10–15 to Wyndham Quito Airport. Have that transfer paid before you fly if you want a name sign instead of a curb decision. Quito Airport Transfer’s prepaid luxury-SUV rates are $100 anywhere in Quito (Old Town, Hyatt, Swissôtel, Oro Verde, Casa Gangotena, and other city addresses), $75 anywhere in Cumbayá, and $50 to Wyndham Quito Airport. Maximum 4 passengers per SUV. 5–8 passengers book a second SUV at twice the destination rate. Book at least three days ahead so a licensed driver can be confirmed.

A taxi or a rideshare can also be the right call for some travelers. The night version of that choice is taxi or Uber from the airport at night.

Email book@uiotransfers.com with the hotel and the flight number if you want them read by a person before you pay. Book the transfer from home, save the confirmation offline, and recheck your flight time and Ecuador’s entry page once more before you head to the airport.
