Quito Airport Arrival Guide: Immigration, Customs, Cash, a SIM, and Your Driver

The first hour at Mariscal Sucre (UIO) is a short sequence: immigration, bags, customs, then the person who is driving you. None of the steps is exotic. All of them feel longer when the flight landed at night and the phone has no data. This is the order to expect, with the parts that are worth arranging before you leave the United States.

Procedures at the airport change. Follow the officers and the instructions your airline gives you that day. This page is a traveler’s sketch, not an official briefing.

Immigration

International arrivals clear passport control before baggage. Have your passport out before you reach the desk. If the airline handed you a form, have that ready too. US travelers should already have checked entry rules — passport validity, how long a tourist stay is admitted, and any health requirement — on official sites before the trip. Those rules are not restated as law here. See a first trip to Quito from the US for what to verify, and then confirm it again close to departure.

The hall is busier in the afternoon bank and thinner late at night. Thinner does not mean instant. One officer and a full aircraft can still be a wait. Stay with your group. Do not send someone outside to “find a taxi” while the rest of you are still in line.

Bags and customs

After immigration you collect bags. Even an on-time flight can sit at the belt. Wait for the last bag before anyone leaves the hall.

Customs is the next desk. Use the form you were given, declare what they ask you to declare, and answer the officer. Do not rely on a blog for duty-free limits or for what food and medication you may bring. If you are unsure, declare it. The honest version of “what happens at customs” is: the rules posted by Ecuadorian customs, on the day you land, are the rules.

Cash: Ecuador uses US dollars

Ecuador’s official currency is the US dollar. If you are flying from the States, you do not change money into a local currency for the taxi, the hotel, or a bottle of water. That removes one usual arrival errand. It does not remove the need for a little cash.

Airport ATMs exist, and they can be empty on a late arrival — bring a backup plan rather than assuming a machine will have notes when you land. Small bills are more useful than a few large ones, because breaking a hundred is awkward at night. Cards work widely in hotels and restaurants; a curbside taxi is still often cash. Tipping and the card-versus-cash detail are in paying for a Quito airport ride. A transfer that is already paid means you are not solving the fare at the curb.

SIM cards and a working phone

Do not make the first task at UIO “get online.” Rideshare, maps, and messages all fail if the phone has no data, and the shops that sell a local SIM are not a plan you should count on at midnight. The reliable version is an eSIM or a roaming plan turned on before you fly, so the phone works when you leave airplane mode.

Mobile companies in Ecuador sell prepaid SIMs, and a counter in or near the terminal may be open during ordinary hours. Treat that as a next-day convenience. Which counter is staffed changes, so this page does not name a kiosk or a carrier. If you want a local SIM, ask at the airport or in town, and check that your phone is unlocked.

Where the driver meets you

For a Quito Airport Transfer booking, the driver waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name, then helps with the luggage to the vehicle. You are looking for your name, not for a person calling out hotels. People who approach you inside the hall offering a ride are not your transfer. Walk to the sign.

The driver has your flight number and is tracking the inbound, so a late arrival does not mean you have missed the car or that the price has changed. The handoff is described in meet and greet at UIO. If you are landing in the evening bank, the late-night arrival guide is the companion to this page.

Have the hotel address in the booking and, as a backup, written down. The drive after that is about 45–60 minutes to Quito, 25–35 minutes to Cumbayá, or 10–15 minutes to Wyndham Quito Airport. Those ranges, and what they do not include, are in how far the airport is.

Book the car before you need any of this

The arrival is calmer when the ride is already paid. $50 to Wyndham Quito Airport, $75 to anywhere in Cumbayá, $100 to anywhere in Quito. Maximum 4 passengers per SUV; 5–8 passengers add a second SUV at twice the destination rate. Book at least three days ahead. Email book@uiotransfers.com if an address or a flight number needs a person to read it.

Book the transfer from home, save the confirmation offline, and use the first hour in the terminal for immigration, bags, and customs — not for finding a car.
