How Far Is Quito Airport from the City? Drive Times to Quito, Cumbayá, and the Airport Hotel

Mariscal Sucre (UIO) is not in Quito. The terminal is in Tababela, east of the city, and the first practical question on a US itinerary is how long the car actually takes. The answer depends on which of three places you mean: the city, the valley town of Cumbayá, or the airport hotel next to UIO.

These are planning ranges for the drive once you are in the car. They are not a promise to the minute, and they do not include immigration or the baggage belt.

Quito: about 45–60 minutes

For a hotel or address in Quito — Old Town, La Mariscal, or the usual city hotels — plan on about 45–60 minutes from the terminal. That is the range to use when you are deciding whether a dinner, a meeting, or a tight connection is realistic.

The prepaid city transfer is published as about 40–60 minutes, because a quiet hour can beat the long end and a slow afternoon can use the whole window. A late-night drive is often toward the shorter end. Afternoon traffic on the climb into town is what pushes a hopeful map time toward an hour.

The route map on this site shows an off-peak snapshot of about 33 km and 34 minutes to Old Town. Treat that as light traffic on one route, not the time to give a restaurant. Door-to-door still depends on the exact address and on whatever the highway is doing that day. If a connection depends on the minute, recheck a live map the week you fly. The ranges here are the ones we publish for planning, not a traffic report.

Cumbayá: about 25–35 minutes

Cumbayá sits in the Valle de Tumbaco, on the valley path between the airport and the city. It is closer than Quito and farther than the airport hotel. The usual transfer is 25–35 minutes.

That shorter hop is why people use the valley for a first night, an early departure, or a base that is still a normal drive from UIO. The neighborhood itself — cafés, the pace, what to do once you are there — is covered in the Cumbayá and Tumbaco guide. The transfer, the price, and who the $75 rate is for are in the Cumbayá airport transfer guide.

Wyndham Quito Airport: about 10–15 minutes

Wyndham Quito Airport is the airport-area hotel in Tababela, next to UIO. It is not a Wyndham in the city. From arrivals, the drive is typically 10–15 minutes.

Ten to fifteen minutes is a short transfer with bags. It is not a walk from the curb to a lobby across the street. If you are deciding whether to rent a car just for that hop, read Quito airport to Wyndham Quito Airport. Staying in the wider Tababela and Puembo area is covered in where to stay near the airport.

What those minutes do not include

A 45-minute drive can still mean a much longer stretch from touchdown to the hotel door. You clear immigration, wait for bags, and only then walk out to the car. On a full international arrival that ground time inside the terminal is its own block. Do not schedule the first evening as if the published drive starts when the wheels touch.

The road itself is the highway west out of Tababela toward the valley, then — if you are going to Quito — the climb into the city. Cumbayá is the stop along that valley path. The city is the climb after it. Night flights from the US often land when that highway is moving, which is a different drive from a late-afternoon arrival. Specific night banks are in the late-arrival guide.

Which time you should actually book

Pick the address first. The clock and the fare follow from it.

The three products sit side by side on the how far section of the homepage. A city-center Wyndham, if that is the hotel on your confirmation, is the $100 city rate. Only the Tababela airport hotel is $50.

Quito Airport Transfer is the prepaid luxury SUV for that drive: a licensed, airport-authorized driver, flight tracking, and a name sign in the arrivals hall. Each SUV takes a maximum of 4 passengers. Parties of 5–8 book a second SUV at twice the destination rate. Book at least three days before pickup. Questions go to book@uiotransfers.com — email only.

The price is the certainty on a highway transfer you do not want to negotiate after a long flight. Compare the three fares on the rates board, or book the transfer before you leave home.
